still love you

Just a quick quickie before I hit the sack. I evacuated Korea this afternoon for Hong Kongier climes: got to apply for my Chinese visa here tomorrow morning before I can proceed to my 30 day tour of duty in Shenzhen. My Chinese agency sent a booker down here to "help" me get my visa; so far she's been a downslowing hindrance and a portent of lonely weeks of ill communication to come. Our conversation has been accomplished word-by-word, hunched together over her little electronic translator. Looking to the future, she's been busy translating and transcribing a few bons mots into her notebook, that they might be ready when she feels the need to deploy them:
"You don't takes a bath." [That's true; I didn't take a bath, and guess what else, I'm not going to; and guess what else? Neither did she, so, like, step off!]
"I have the daughter of three years old."
"Rain outside clogs up."
"Please don't chat."
"Do some big poses"
"Do some small poses."
"Do some happy and cheerful poses."

I can do all these poses and more, poses "cool" and "lady" and "lovely," poses "fantastic" and "elegant" and "like swimming in the sea." And I will do. But first Korean snacks:

In Korean, the bottle on the right says "chi-juh [cheese] uyu [milk]."

As a general rule, I don't like my snacks to be so bossy.

eww. cheese milk? that's like salty milk.
did it taste any good? =/
i wonder how chestnut milk tastes like...

[info]elysesewell

May 20 2008, 15:22:43 UTC 4 years ago

I'd tried both in recent weeks and neither was very good. Chestnut was more promising but I just don't like that flavor, be it in milk or in chestnuts propa.

I remember the first time I came to Korea, there was a sweet potato-flavored milk that was awesome. I'm happy to be back in Hong Kong with a carton of damn Malted Vitasoy. World's best milk!

Make sure you have a copy of your ticket departing from China as well as your hotel information. They're being majorly bitchy about issuing their visas here in Hong Kong lately. Stupid Olympics.

Ugh, fuck, this is good advice. I have a whole "invitation letter," etc, but no fricking outgoing ticket. Ideally I could've accomplished this in Korea but you must have a Korean passport or resident alien card.

HATE administrative bullshit like this.

can you speak any of the languages? do you find you are picking it up?

[info]elysesewell

May 20 2008, 15:28:28 UTC 4 years ago

Yes, and yes. Learning the local language is such an interesting occupation for my idle mind. I was severely disappointed to find how much Canto had fallen out of my brain in my absence from Hong Kong; for example, the cardinal numbers of Korean. Japanese, Mandarin and Canto all sound kind of similar, and they're all just muddled into a mess in my head. Bah!

PS I was talking to my friend about how rad it was that we could read the Korean alphabet; how deceptively easy it is and how unfairly smart it makes us seem. I hope I never forget that shit.

Chocolate coating cake! Argh, that brand has a sweet potato flavored cake which I'd swear is the worst thing I've ever eaten. Pales in comparison to a Choco-Pie or Fresh Pie. I miss Korean snack cakes : / A former co-worker would get care packages from K-town and she'd never eat the sweets, so they got passed on to me.

I do NOT LIKE Choco-Pie. The best snack cake for me is the Margaret Soft Cookie.

I'm still waiting for a post about Durian. I came so fucking close to grabbing some Durian ice cream at Uwajimaya awhile back, but just couldn't bring myself to do it.

[info]elysesewell

May 20 2008, 15:30:59 UTC 4 years ago

Durian is delect, man. Get thee to Uwaji and get down with it!

Even better if you're in Portland is that Vietnamese market on 82nd...so much more desirably dark'n'dirty than Uwajimaya.

Cheese milk... I think we have that in the States... it's called milk gone sour for more than two weeks and it's becoming cheese.

Why is it Asian snack foods tell you everything about them, including how you'll feel about them? If that's how easy it is to read minds, then I need to hop on that gravy train and start charging people $4.99/minute...

May 20 2008, 20:23:24 UTC 4 years ago

*lol* You're totally right about the snack foods. I was just giggling over how they like to see us happy with our people. Kind of weird in a 1984 Big Brother way. "Big Brother is Pleased That You are Eating Chocolate Coated Cakes. He is Pleased that You are Smiling."

Don't you love English loan words in Korean? Sometimes I'll be reading something and it'll say like may-ill and I'll wonder what it means in Korean, until I realize that it's English. Oh mail!

[info]elysesewell

May 20 2008, 15:37:39 UTC 4 years ago

YES! I was so happy to learn Hangeul and discover the amount of transliterated English that was illuminated for me. Even esoterica like "Hu-ren-chuh [French] Pie"...so good!

Off to the lead mines

Don't breathe too deeply once in the lead mine. That goes double after reading your contemplated personal hygiene routine. So much for the innocent girl of 18 who once bemoaned the lacking facilities. You've finally gone native.

I hope the electronic communication situation won't be as bad as the booker communications [sic] sound. A month of LJ-less "Please don't chat" would probably result in some fatalities, given your well-known stalk 'n' kill reputation.

Just taste this cake, and nobody gets hurt. Talk about not understanding their target market. Since when do you need to be strong-armed into eating sweets? The cheese milk sounds like a clever way to sell partially curdled real milk--eww. I'd stick to the nut milk if I were you.

The quake in China is horrible. Luckily you are going to shenzhen which is a distance away from Sichun. Just curious, is the aftermath of the quake makes it even harder for you to apply Chinese visas?

[info]elysesewell

May 20 2008, 15:56:43 UTC 4 years ago

I hope not!

A major component of my Chinese booker's pretranslated notebook sentiments had to do with the quake and how bad and sad it makes her feel. Natural disasters in places with no infrastructure are so scary.
