Last night, I lurked around watching this girl eat at a tteokbokki stall on the street. Thanks to her, I figured out the method: ask for your tteokbokki by the piece; the stall proprietor will cut it up and give it to you on a plate. Grab as much skewered stuff out of the broth as you want; the proprietor will count up the empty skewers at the end and charge you.

So I was ready to feast this afternoon. Look at the drink I was given: a ladle of hot broth from the reservoir in front of my plate.

If not for you, LJ, I wouldn't've bothered investigating the skewered shit. I thought it was going to be tofu, but it turned out to be fish sausage.

The stall was also selling these sandwiches: fried egg, ham, shredded cabbage, ketchup and mustard.

And on the theme of stalls, here's one I saw later.

No reason. Besides Snoop Doggy Dogg.

I had to walk in three Dunkin Donuts before I solved the mystery of the testicular donut hole. Frickin Cinnamon Chewisty Munchkins were sold out all over town!

I also added this pic to Mc Donald's of the World

Can I take a moment to express my appreciation for my two roommates, Kvetchka and a fine new Canuck that just arrived on Thursday? They're quiet, clean, and respectful. And they don't watch TV and they don't smoke! But now the Canuck's friend, this force of darkness, has swarmed in to await their imminent departure for tha club. This is what she is shrilling to the Canuck as I sit here trying to type my LJ entry. This is an exact quotation: "You should get like white mascara and stuff. Like for you in like the winter and stuff, like you could pull that off." My mellow is harshed.
Update: she just redeemed herself with a story about how she's buying horrendously cheap rum called "Captain Q," and laughing at my Jurassic Park impression. Still wish I was alone in the house though. Fifteen more minutes and I will be!

D'ok-Bok-Ki
That's D'ok-Bok-Ki (rice cakes) which is made with K'oh-Chu-Chang (the red chilli sauce). Hands down, the best street food ever. Well, maybe next to Pad Thai off the streets of Bangkok.4 years ago

I (heart) Korea
I'm enjoying reading about your time in Seoul. This entry about food is making me hungry and homesick for my motherland, Korea. The D'ok-bok-ki is one of my favorite street foods, it's made with anchovy broth, chilli sauce, and rice cakes. YUMMY.
The picture with the donut balls is pretty funny because the Korean text is actually a phonetic spelling of the English phrase. They then translated the phonetic phrase (from Korean) back into English, which explains the crazy phrase (chewisty?).
When are you coming back to HK?

hey elyse! IDEAIf I sent you one of my shirts or tote bags from my website would you take a picture with it like you do when you take your pictures jumping in the air or eating some once-living oriental treats? I would be excited to have you wearing one of my shirts.
Oh and I sent you a postcard about it when you allowed them, I sent the one with my boyfriends toothbrush in the tiolet

It was great seeing you on the "Top Models Exposed" recently. As much as Tyra has pretended that the first season didn't exist, it's pretty obvious in ten cycles, Elyse is still the coolest person who has ever been on the show.

love your pics elyse!
oh wow! if we have fire escapes like that, i'd be sliding all my way down everyday, escaping...many times.as for munchkins, i definitely love bavarian filled! dunno if it's cute to nick it as 'testicle' especially after you bite it and copious yellowish green stuff oozes out. as for korean streetfood...wow, as long as there's no dogmeat there, binge away!
how strategic of you to avoid getting reflected in that train window...and i think kvetchka's name is adorable.

your blog is great
seriously...i work 12 hour shifts (tech support) and rarely find something as entertaining as your blog out on the intertron. i'm glad to see you have made a career even after ANTM. It sounds like you have a wonderful life! Best of luck to you and if you don't mind, I'm going to add your blog to my preferred list for future perusal.take care,

Fire escape?
I saw an earlier comment that the slide was a fire escape -- I thought it was some kind of pre-school for danger-loving kids. That is possibly the coolest way ever to flee your burning home.Incidentally, the morons on ANTM Season 1 who thought you had an eating disorder should take a look at your photos. You are a true foodie!

Re: Fire escape?
i believe that was my comment. i dont think it's a fire escape but it would be very cool to have one like that slide. if it exits to a pool so much the better. :D4 years ago
