There is nothing more inspiring than a warehouse full of stamps.
What a nice taxi driver!
Heading to Taiwan next month. I'm excited.
I'm from Taiwan~~ Wow your pictures make me really miss home now.....
Me: (a little tequila-ed) I hate fucking Hong Kong and its people.

Old Benevolent Taxi Driver: Ahh. Don't waste your time hating.

Me: I'm just tired of the people.

OBTD: It's OK. I get the worst of it too. Sometimes, people don't even pay me; they just run away.

Me: Your English is really good!

OBTD: I used to teach.

We arrive at the destination. I hand in money.

OBTD: It's OK. It's on me. Enjoy Hong Kong!

It only took one person to make my day that day.

jovial taxi driver with heavy, ambiguous accent which contained no interrogative inflection: this is your first time in toronto.

me (drunk): yes.

jtdwhaawcnii: it's a good city. it is very old and it took a long time to build it.

me: yes.

jtdwhaawcnii: that is because they had to make all of the buildings. all of the buildings were made by people. it took them a long time. you know what the buildings are made from.

me: yes.

jtdwhaawcnii: they are still making some of the city even now. it will take a very long time.

me: rome wasn't....yes.

jtdwhaawcnii: are you enjoying toronto.

me: yes. sorry, where did i say i was going?

jtdwhaawcnii: you said to go where there are people dancing.

me: yes. where people are building dancing.

jtdwhaawcnii: no.

Stinky tofu is easily one of my favorite foods...I eagerly await your judgement of it.
Please tell me you bought that New Mexico shirt. Haha!
My god, look at the shadows on those things! Cakes for late in the day.
awww at the cabbie. just goes to show you that some people can really surprise you sometimes.
Stinky tofu is what occurs when you go to sleep without brushing your teeth, get up in the morning, scrape the plaque off your teeth and then save it for years until you have enough to make blocks to deepfry and eat.

I'm sorry, I've just never had "aromatic" and "good" stinky tofu.
yay for awesome cab drivers. I got stranded outside of Barcelona once and the cab driver saved us for free, too. He was one of the nicest people ever.
*waves* Hey there!

Aw, were you able to give him a quick tip before he drove off? I mean I tend to tip anyway, even if they aren't being talkative but that's just me. However I'd definitely tip, though, if I had gotten that long ride for free. :]
Ugh, NO, I was so discombobulated by the closing ceremony that by the time it occurred to me, the driver was already puttering away and I was blinking on the sidewalk, my wallet in my hand, like a total jerk. And seriously that is a dirty shame, not only for the driver, but for me, because nothing gives me a sense of suave achievement like dispensing a rad tip at the right moment with no awkward balks/fumbles. So gangster.

The korean version of the 'oh yes' cakes:

Before I knew how to read Hangul I just called them Q cakes.
"You know that sweet things make smile.
We love to see you smile with your people.
So just taste this cake."
elyse, you are single-handedly responsible for my newfound interest in visiting this part of the world. i never thought of it as that beautiful or interesting until i started reading your picture posts.
Maybe the taxi driver thought you were on amazing race.

I love all the Engrish finds.
Elyse wants to be on the Amazing Race. It would be awesome.
florid piece of sweaty hag-gristle FTW! That's a beautiful turn of phrase, entirely worth of a Tom Robbin's award - if such a thing existed.
and I love you, too.
You make me so happy with these posts! :: bows to you ::
hehe the man in the picture at chiang kai-shek is making a great "i smell something nasty" face! :)

Are giving me a serious case of stamen envy.

BTW, I think your sunburn can be cured by judicious application of Enisimthent.

I really enjoyed these pictures, as for right now, they will be as close as I will get to the land of my birth. My father was stationed at CCK Air Base in Taichung during the Vietnam War, and I was born at the now-shuttered US Naval Hospital in Taipei. Since I was only seven months old when my family left Taiwan, I obviously have no memories of my time there, though there are plenty of pictures of me enjoying baseball games while sucking on a pacifier dipped in rice wine to ease teething pain.
I'd like to hear what your Mandarin sounds like.
Ah ah, that's some really classic Engrish right there haha.

But this sounded like a lovely trip!

Also...those Teeshirts...and antler liquer...o.O
Yay, Taiwan! I'm so glad you finally made it over there. (I was born and partially raised there. I love going back to visit family.)

Have you been to the food court in SOGO? Sometimes I make myself ill by eating everything in sight. Freaking awesome.

More pictures, please! And more stories about your non-Taipei adventures. Are you thinking of taking the high speed train to Kaohsiung?
"my lips pursed into a tight little asshole"

best line ever.
i want to go there,
only to get shirts with really bad engrish on them.
hahahahaha on the kate hair debacle.
